Mop head types: loop-end, cut-end, microfibre and flat
The head does the work; the bucket only wrings it. Choosing the right one changes the result far more than upgrading the bucket does.
Cut-end string mops
Bundled yarn cut flat at the bottom. The cheapest option and effectively disposable — they shed, they fray and they are usually thrown away rather than laundered.
They suit rough surfaces, spills and heavy one-off jobs where you do not want the mop back. On a finished floor they leave lint behind.
Loop-end string mops
The yarn is looped and stitched through a band at the bottom. That single change means they do not unravel, they hold more water, they cover more area per pass and they can be laundered and reused many times.
The banded top also spreads the yarn wider, so a loop-end mop covers ground faster. For any regular cleaning job this is the standard choice, and the extra cost is recovered quickly.
Bands
Narrow-band heads fit most standard handles and wring easily. Wide-band heads cover more ground and last longer but need a compatible wringer and handle.
Microfibre
Split synthetic fibres with a very large surface area that lift and hold fine particles rather than pushing them. They pick up more with less water, which means faster drying and less streaking on hard floors.
They come as round heads for spin buckets and as flat pads. They launder well but should not be washed with fabric softener, which coats the fibres and destroys the property that makes them work.
Flat mops
A rectangular frame with a removable pad, usually microfibre. The advantages are reach — they go under furniture and into corners a round mop cannot — and control, since the pad is used damp rather than wet.
The trade-off is capacity: a pad covers a limited area before it needs changing, so a large space means several pads. For a flat or a small shop that is fine; for a warehouse it is not.
Some systems have a built-in reservoir and a trigger or pump, which removes the bucket entirely for small jobs.
Matching head to floor
- Sealed concrete, quarry tile, commercial kitchen: loop-end string, side-press wringer.
- Vinyl, LVT, ceramic tile: microfibre round or flat, used damp.
- Hardwood and laminate: flat microfibre, barely damp. Standing water is the enemy here.
- Rough or outdoor surfaces, heavy spills: cut-end, and expect to discard it.
Sizing
Head weight is given in ounces. Heavier heads hold more water and cover more ground but are harder to wring and heavier to push all day. For most indoor work a mid-weight head is the sensible balance; the largest sizes suit large open floors.
The cost over a year
A cut-end head is cheapest to buy and is replaced constantly. A loop-end or microfibre head costs more once and survives many launderings. Over a year of regular use the reusable head is almost always the cheaper option, as well as the one that leaves a better floor.
Practical checks before ordering
- Match the head to the floor, not to the bucket.
- Check band width against your handle and wringer.
- Choose microfibre for finished floors and string for rough ones.
- Never wash microfibre with fabric softener.
- Check whether a spare head is included before buying one separately.
