Choosing a mop bucket: 22, 26 or 35 quart
Mop buckets are sold by capacity in quarts, and the number is not really about how much water you need. It is about how far you can go between refills and how heavy the thing is when full.
What the sizes mean in use
22 quart
Around five and a half gallons. Suitable for a flat, a small office or a single room. Light enough to carry up stairs when part-filled and small enough to store in a cupboard.
A 22-quart bucket filled to a working level covers a few hundred square feet before the water is too dirty to be useful.
26 quart
The middle option. More range between refills, still manageable in a domestic setting. A reasonable choice for a large apartment or a small shop.
35 quart
The commercial standard. Around nine gallons, designed to be pushed on castors rather than carried, and sized to do a restaurant kitchen or a shop floor without a refill mid-job.
Weight, which decides more than capacity
Water weighs a little over eight pounds per gallon. A 35-quart bucket filled to capacity is therefore carrying somewhere around seventy pounds of water plus the bucket itself.
That is not a thing to carry. It is a thing to push, which is why every bucket at that size has wheels and why the question “can I get this up a flight of stairs” is answered before you fill it, not after.
For a walk-up apartment, a 22-quart bucket carried half-full is a far more realistic proposition than a 35 that has to be emptied to move.
Castors and floors
Non-marking swivel castors matter on any finished floor — standard castors leave grey marks on light vinyl and tile that are harder to remove than the dirt you were mopping.
Wheel size matters on thresholds and door strips. Small wheels stop dead at a raised threshold and the bucket tips; larger wheels roll over.
Separated water
Some commercial buckets divide the tank into clean and soiled sections, so the wrung-out dirty water does not go back into the clean supply. This extends the useful life of a bucket of water considerably.
It is the built-in version of the two-bucket method, and for anyone cleaning a large area it is the single most useful feature on the list.
Drain hoses
A drain plug or hose lets you empty a full bucket without lifting it. On a 35-quart bucket this is not a luxury: tipping seventy pounds of dirty water into a floor sink is how buckets get dropped and backs get hurt.
What comes with the bucket
Some units are a bucket and wringer only; others are a complete set with a mop, and some include a spare head or a wet-floor sign. The difference in price often reflects exactly that, so it is worth reading the contents rather than comparing headline figures.
